Introduction: Depression is an affective mental illness characterized by symptoms such as sadness, loss of interest, and the inability to experience feelings of pleasure. It becomes chronic in most patients and progresses through recurrent episodes.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of conventional treatment combined with acupuncture according to the traditional Asian diagnosis in patients diagnosed with mild and moderate depression at the "Mario Muñoz Monroy" Military Hospital in Matanzas (July 2022-July 2023).
Materials and methods: A retrospective, descriptive, interventional study was conducted to evaluate the effect of conventional treatment combined with acupuncture according to the traditional Asian diagnosis in patients diagnosed with mild and moderate depression seen in the Psychiatry Department of the "Mario Muñoz Monroy" Military Hospital in Matanzas (July 2022-July 2023).
Results: In the study sample of 54 patients, 45 patients transitioned to no depression, representing 83,3 % of the cases. Of the 30 patients initially classified as mildly depressed, only 5 did not achieve full recovery by the end of the third cycle. Of the 24 patients with moderate depression, 4 did not progress satisfactorily.
Conclusions: Conventional treatment complemented with acupuncture, according to traditional Chinese diagnosis, in patients with mild and moderate depressive syndrome is favorable given their progress, as it is possible to achieve improvement in their symptoms with the application of the proposed procedure.
