Abstract

Introduction: Emergency services in hospitals worldwide have advanced over the years by implementing new techniques to solve respiratory problems in older adult patients. These respiratory problems are an important cause of hospital mortality and morbidity. One of the measures that have been taken to reduce it is the use of artificial mechanical ventilation.

Objective: to describe pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation in the elderly patient.

Method: A systematic review was carried out using as information resources those available through Infomed (PubMed, PubMed Central, SciELO, Ebsco, Clinical Key), as well as Google Scholar. The search provided 78 articles, 26 were taken to cite the work

Development: In this review, all the updated content regarding pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation from its early diagnosis was described; as well as its main causes analyzed from the point of view of clinical trials, the options that are taken today for its treatment. Preventive alternatives for this disease that affects patients in the Intensive Care Unit were also described.

Conclusions: The most important risk factor for ventilator-associated pneumonia is the underlying medical conditions of mechanically ventilated patients, including their comorbidities and disease severity. Among its main complications are septic shock as well as induced lung damage. Among the sources of infection are bronchial aspiration, catheters as a source of entry as well as surgical wounds
