Association between COVID—19 and cerebrovascular disease
Keywords:
COVID-19, cerebrovascular disease, risk factorsAbstract
Introduction: cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) cause a temporary or permanent brain disorder secondary to a pathological process of the blood vessels of the brain. This has been an entity, whose incidence and severity have been associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Objective: to characterize the influence of COVID-19 in CVD.
Methodological Design: articles related to the pathophysiology of COVID-19 as well as its association with CVD were selected; Articles in Spanish and English were accepted. The search was carried out using as keywords: COVID-19, cerebrovascular disease, pathophysiology. The sources of information consulted were Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Scielo and Dialnet. In this way, 26 articles and 1 book were selected, where more than 75% are from the last 5 years, and through an analysis of the publications, the information of interest was extracted.
Development: the main receptor of the coronavirus is the angiotensin converting enzyme, which is considered the gateway to the cardiovascular and nervous system. The scientific literature has identified several potential mechanisms by which COVID-19 could increase CVD risk: cytokine storm, hypercoagulability, cardioembolism from virus-related cardiac injury, and hypoxia.
Conclusions: The occurrence of CVD is favored in patients with COVID19 by states caused by the virus itself: cytokine storm, hypercoagulability, cardioembolism, hypoxia; and that, depending on the risk factors present in the patient, can determine the severity of the condition
