The role of the tutor in the training of the surgical assistant student

Abstract

Human resources training in the surgical field constitutes a fundamental pillar to ensure quality of care and continuity of the health system. In this context, the surgical assistant student represents a key link in the teaching-learning process, while the tutor assumes a leading role as facilitator, guide, and model of professionalism. This article analyzes the role of the tutor in the training of the surgical assistant student from a pedagogical, ethical, and care perspective. It is argued that the tutor not only transmits technical knowledge but also models transversal competencies such as clinical reasoning, decision-making, effective communication, and ethical commitment. Current challenges derived from care complexity, time limitations, and the need for competency-based training are addressed. It is concluded that strengthening the tutorial role through pedagogical training of tutors and institutionalization of mentorship programs constitutes a strategic investment for the quality of medical education and patient safety.
